What drives Whole-Room Remodels costs

Whole-room remodels are the hardest projects to estimate because the number depends less on the room's size than on how far you take it. A cosmetic refresh — paint, fixtures, hardware, maybe a countertop — sits at one end; a gut renovation that moves plumbing, rewires, relocates walls, and replaces everything sits at the other, often several times the cost for the same footprint. The big swing factors are the cabinets and the layout: stock cabinets versus custom is a large line by itself, and moving a sink, tub, or gas line means new plumbing and often permits and inspections.

Labor coordination adds cost that materials lists miss — a remodel is many trades in sequence (demo, framing, plumbing, electrical, drywall, tile, cabinets, counters, paint), and the general contractor's job of scheduling and standing behind that sequence is part of what you pay for. Assume some surprises: opening walls in an older home routinely reveals wiring, plumbing, or rot that has to be fixed before finishes go back. The calculators below break a remodel into its major cost centers and quality tiers so you can build a realistic budget and read a contractor's bid against it. Each returns a low-to-high planning range, not a quote — plan with it, then get two or three detailed local bids.

Estimates are planning ranges, not contractor quotes. See how we build the ranges and the data sources. We don't replace your contractor, permit, or inspector.
