The finish line is where a sidewalk budget usually gets away from people. A broom finish is the default for good reason — it is the cheapest option and the least slippery — while a stamped walk at $2,868–$5,582 costs roughly what the same walk plus a second short walk would. A steel-trowelled smooth finish is cheap but a poor outdoor choice: it is slick when wet, which is exactly when people use the front walk.
Stepping from 4 inches to 6 inches costs $1,985–$3,535 and is worth it only where something with wheels and weight will cross. For a walk that carries people, the extra two inches buy very little; the money is better spent on the base underneath.
How wide, how thick, and who can use it

Those numbers are not legally binding on your front path, but they describe what is actually usable with a wheelchair, a walker, or a stroller — and they cost nothing extra to design in if you decide the line and the grade before the forms go down.
On thickness: 4 inches is standard for foot traffic and 6 inches is for vehicle crossings, such as the apron where a walk meets a driveway. This is the question that catches homeowners out, and the answer is usually uncomfortable: in many American cities the strip between the curb and the property line is public right-of-way, while a local ordinance makes the adjacent property owner responsible for maintaining and repairing the walk that crosses it. You are frequently paying to replace concrete you do not own.
Practical consequences worth knowing before you get quotes:
Work in the right-of-way usually needs a permit, and the walk must be built to the city’s standard detail — often a specified width, thickness, mix and joint spacing, whatever you would have preferred. The permit line in the table above is sized for that case.
Some cities cost-share. Programs vary widely: a 50/50 split, a full replacement on a city schedule, or nothing at all. Ask before you pay for the whole thing.
A trip hazard may be citable. Many jurisdictions issue notices for a vertical displacement of about three-quarters of an inch or more, with a deadline. Grinding or slab-jacking a single displaced panel is far cheaper than replacing the run.
Tree roots are usually the cause. Replacing the panel without dealing with the root that lifted it buys a few years at most, and removing a street tree is often the city’s decision rather than yours.
