Paver calculator: pavers, base gravel, sand and edging
Enter the patio’s length and width, the paver size and the pattern. You get the number of pavers with extra for cuts, the crushed-stone base, the bedding sand, the bags of polymeric joint sand and the edging.
The paver patio cost calculator prices the same patio installed: pavers, base, sand, fabric, edging, excavation and labor. Quantities here and there come from the same factors, so the two always agree.

How this calculator works
Area is length × width. Pavers are that area with 5% extra for a running-bond or stack pattern and 15% for herringbone, circles or diagonals (the paver patio cost calculator’s allowances), divided by the face of one paver at its nominal size.
The base is crushed stone: area × depth, ordered 25% over the finished volume because it compacts, at 1.45 tons per cubic yard, the same factors as the gravel calculator. Bedding sand is a 1 in layer.
Polymeric joint sand is counted at 75 sq ft per bag; narrow joints use less and wide or tumbled pavers more. Edge restraint runs the full perimeter.
Quantities are for planning and ordering. Check the plan, the supplier’s product data and local code before you buy; for structural concrete, follow the drawings.
Frequently asked questions
How many pavers do I need for a 12x12 patio?
A 12 × 12 ft patio is 144 sq ft. With 5% extra for a running-bond pattern that is 404 pavers of 6 × 9 in. It also takes about 3.2 tons of crushed stone for a 4 in base and 2 bags of polymeric sand.
How many pavers are in a square foot?
At nominal size: 4.5 brick pavers of 4 × 8 in, 4 pavers of 6 × 6 in, about 2.7 of 6 × 9 in, 1 of 12 × 12 in, and about 0.56 of 16 × 16 in. Add extra for cuts on top of that.
How much gravel do I need under pavers?
Patios and walkways usually sit on 4 to 6 in of compacted crushed stone. A 10 × 20 ft patio on a 4 in base takes about 4.5 tons, ordered over the finished volume because the stone compacts. Driveways need a deeper base.
How much sand do I need for pavers?
Two kinds: a 1 in layer of bedding sand under the pavers, about 0.44 cubic yards for a 12 × 12 patio, and polymeric sand swept into the joints, about one bag per 75 sq ft.
